Our Honeymoon
April 10 – 23, 2017:
Hellooooo Mexico! Our honeymoon was hands down the best trip either of us has ever been on. If funds were no option, “all inclusive” would be the only way to vacation! Not only were the post-wedding butterflies present and the pre-wedding stress gone but with the all inclusive packages, everything was taken care of and *almost* seamless. Some places were more “all inclusive” than others with Playa Del Carmen taking home 1st prize as our favorite.
Our first stop was 3 days in Cozumel at the Occidental Grand. We were welcomed with a “happy honeymoon” cake and bottle of wine. The hotel seemed to be somewhat in a beautiful jungle type environment with a boardwalk to the beach. We spent the whole first day sleeping… yep, sleeping (refer to the pre-wedding stress mentioned above)! After our much needed rest, we stayed pretty busy. We took a boat ride for a bit and went parasailing. We rented a Moped and explored the town – including a visit to El Cedral & the Tequila Musem. The highlight of Cozumel was the snorkeling. We opted for a snorkeling tour which took us to the 3 main reefs: El Cielo, Palancar, and Columbia. During the snorkel trip we saw some turtles, lots of fish and starfish, and even came face to face with a BARRACUDA. Good thing we didn’t know that barracudas are not known for being nice… it helped that the Cozumel ones are used to humans so a staring contest is all that it wanted. Two to three days in Cozumel is really all that you need so we were excited to partake in our next adventure.
Our second stop was Playa Del Carmen. The second we walked into The Royal, welcomed by their delicious caribbean welcome drink, we knew we had made the right choice to stay here longer. SIX days in paradise here! While we would have been perfectly content just relaxing at the many pool bars, nice restaurants, in-room jacuzzi & hammock, and beach beds that this resort had to offer… we had lots of activities to partake in. We spent some time taking a bike ride around the city and had a beautiful dinner on the beach for the 2 of us. Highlights of this trip included visiting the various theme parks: Xcaret, Xel-ha, and Xplor. We visited Xplor at night (Xplor Fuego) which was a blast – ziplines and ATVs galore! Xcaret was more commercial/touristy but still really fun – this park included swimming with dolphins and cave swimming (cave water is MUY FRIO!). Xel-ha was the most chill of the 3 parks but is also where we SNUBA’d with some stingrays. We also made sure to take a tour to Tulum to visit the Mayan ruins which was amazing. Tulum, as we learned, was a seaport that was pretty well protected – sea on one side, large wall on the other… and a few structures set up to keep watch. The Castillo was one of the more impressive structures and while guests can no longer climb on the ruins, just being close to them can make any amateur history buff excited. After our time in Playa, we contemplated just staying forever (creative towel animals every night!) but how can you not be excited about Cancun?!
That brings us to our third and final stop, Cancun! We spent a wonderful 5 days at the Live Aqua resort. Each resort had their own welcoming process and this one came with hand massages & minty towels. After getting over the initial awkwardness, even Adrian enjoyed it 🙂 Cancun was truly the most social part of our trip – it included much less tourist exploration and much more shopping, beach days, restaurants, and night life. Cancun also brought us our only day of rain which did NOT bring us down! We borrowed some fashionable ponchos and still got soaked running around outside and then took advantage of the resort’s large movie collection, comfy robes, and unlimited popcorn bowls. On our last night we took the city bus to the bar district to experience the typical Cancun night at Mandala – it was just like the pictures… those kids are CRAZY!
We had been dreading going back home not only because we were leaving paradise but because we left the house in total shambles as we raced to the wedding finish-line. Low and behold… we entered a completely clean house with wedding cards and gifts nicely laid out for us – thanks mom!!!!
